To-fu hamburger steak recipe

By Mihoko, April 17, 2009 9:30 pm

Stofu-hamburgu As you probably already know, tofu is a very healthy(low calorie, high textured vegetable protein, high lecithin content, which is good for your brain), and very typical Japanese food (also Chinese?), so lots of Japanese people mix tofu into hamburger mince to reduce the calorie count and improve nutritious value. In fact, it’s pretty common nowadays because tofu is an inexpensive and common food in Japan — 1 pack of tofu averages 1~2 dollars, and it’s available from any food store.

Since tofu is much cheaper than meat in Japan, mixing tofu into hamburger mince also is good for your pocket. Here in Melbourne, however, tofu costs nearly the same as meat, so you won’t be saving any money with this recipe, but you can still make a healthier meal, with more portions that can go towards entertaining, or lunch meat during thee week.

This recipe uses meat and tofu fifty-fifty, so it still has a very strong meat taste — you can’t really taste the tofu at all. Adding the tofu just makes the hamburger steak fluffy and juicy. You might not like this recipe if you’re a really big fan of solid hamburger steaks… like a meaty rock…

But still you can try it!

Here is the recipe. Continue reading 'To-fu hamburger steak recipe'»

Anyone for Sorbet?

By Mihoko, February 9, 2009 7:42 pm

It’s now the middle of the summer in the Southern Hemisphere — and bloody hell,… 46 degrees (C) in Melbourne!!

I can never eat enough ice cream! But wait — almost all of the ice cream from the supermarket is pretty high calorie, and contains lots of food additives — better not eat too much then! So I tried to make homemade sherbet… It’s much healthier and it’s so fresh and tasty!! And it’s so easy — you can add or reduce sugar to your liking! Continue reading 'Anyone for Sorbet?'»

Make Pizza!

Homemade pizza can be worth the effort...

Homemade pizza can be worth the effort...

If you have a breadmaker, then you should bake pizza at home for fun like we do sometimes!

Put 1 1/2 cups water, 3 tbsp oil, 1 tbs sugar, 1 tsp salt, 4 1/2 cup flour, 2 1/2 tsp yeast into the breadmaker, and set it off (but don’t set a bake cycle). When the dough is ready, divide the dough into 3~4 pieces and leave to stand for about 30 minutes to expand. You can then shape the dough (traditional flat discs or however you like) and put each base on a tray – don’t forget to use oven paper so it doesn’t stick. Make holes in each with a fork – so they don’t expand – and bake in a preheated oven at 200′c for 5 minutes, then cover with your favorite topping. Finally, bake the pizza in an oven at 230′c until light brown.

Update: If you don’t have a breadmaker, you can always knead by hand, just knead well, and wait until it doubles in size (you might need toactivate the yeast this way, too).
