The pros and cons of console and PC gaming

By Greg, March 2, 2010 7:38 pm

pc_vs_console Since the dawn of time, humankind has argued over the merits of this versus that. In the mighty world of game, there was the Sega vs. Nintendo war of the early 90’s, the PSP vs. DS age, and more recently, the Xbox 360 vs. PS3 (and both vs. Wii) conundrum. However you may feel about any of these machines, one war that has waged in the background without waning is the war between the console and PC fans.

It’s an interesting one, really. Styles of gaming have always differed across these machine types, and there has always been a pervasive divider between the two. There has also, for as long as I can remember, been a consensus amongst console gamers that PC gaming is dead. Well, it hasn’t died yet, and let’s face it… it won’t die anytime soon. Regardless of how you feel (I’m a console gamer myself), I thought it pertinent to list the pros and cons of each, if only to help me understand why such a division exists.

Game Room – exciting stuff for old-school gamers

By Greg, January 7, 2010 7:17 pm

Just a quick post to say that I’m excited – not in a long while has a video from a gaming/electronics conference made me excited enough to post here… But here it is. Xbox Game Room – a place to buy and share old school arcade games at a fairly low cost (click here for more info direct from Microsoft). Of course, you have to have an Xbox 360… or a PC running Games for Windows Live! I’m guessing you have a PC, so get excited, too!

Update: The old video I had posted wouldn’t work for some reason. hopefully I’ve fixed this with the below Youtube video!

Xmas gaming bargains

By Greg, December 26, 2009 2:40 pm

retro-pac-man-christmas-tree-madrid-0 If you like games, then it’s time to get out your crusty old wallet, but don’t expect to be spending all of your savings (particularly as it is likely you don’t have much this soon after Xmas) – there are bargains to be had!

I don’t know everything out there, of course, but here are the few bargains I’ve found in the past couple of days – all of which have raised the old eyebrows here and there, and a couple even made me throw some cash their way…

Tablet awesomeness

By Greg, December 8, 2009 8:21 pm

touchsmart My wife and I are both kind of tech geeks. Come evening time, and we both want to use the computer – for whatever reason. With a little baby, time on the puty is limited even more. As a result, I have little time to post here… Until now. This week, we splashed out on a new laptop.

To date, we’ve been using an 18.4” desktop replacement – an Acer 8930G. It’s an awesome system, but it’s heavy, and so not very portable. thus, we decided to get something more portable – but we also wanted something a little different. So we bought a tablet – HPs tx2-1316au, a multitouch Touchsmart unit. and it’s awesome.

Taking the plunge into Microsoft Security Essentials

By Greg, October 3, 2009 8:45 pm

MicrosoftSecurityEssentials Microsoft recently released Microsoft Security Essentials – their all-in-one solution to your virus- and bot-destroying needs. At first, I expected it to be another half-assed attempt at something that plenty of other companies are already doing better (even though MS has recently been pretty good with their "Essentials" range – particularly Live Writer). However, it seems this may not be the case.

Remembering the Aliens vs Predator video games

By Greg, May 31, 2009 7:36 pm

alien-vs-predatorThe Alien and Predator franchises… As a sci-fi/horror fan, these movies are the pinnacle of awesomeness, the combination of which should result in pure, kick-ass, pants-messingly splendid offspring. And yet it didn’t — the Alien vs Predator movies, while entertaining, were a bit of a let down… They left out some of the kick-ass, and replaced it with pretty much standard sci-fi fare. But they’re still relatively cool, for what they are…

AVP video games, on the other hand, are a different story. While it took the movies many moons to come to life, AVP games have been around since the early to mid ‘90s and most (if not all) have been sufficiently impressive… Continue reading 'Remembering the Aliens vs Predator video games'»

PopCap Games make life good

By Greg, May 23, 2009 11:07 pm

Everybody loves zombies. Even people that say they don’t like zombies secretly love zombies. And that’s what makes PopCap Games’ latest so super special (see video above for proof of awesome)…

PopCap Games makes games. This might be obvious to some, but I thought I’d clarify. They’ve made some pretty well-known titles, including Bejeweled, Zuma, the almighty Peggle, and now, with the release of Plants vs Zombies, have really made their mark on the video game world (if they hadn’t already). I thought PopCap was pretty cool prior to the release of PvZ, now I think they are the shizNIT.

Dragon Age: Origins looks to be the bomb diggety

By Greg, April 21, 2009 9:14 pm

Generally, I don’t like posting videos about video games. For one, if you’re into games, you’ve got plenty of other places you can go to take a look. For two (is that how it goes — “for one”, “for two”, “for three”? Doesn’t sound right – but I’m damnwell going for it!), if the game turns out to be shit… well?

Anyway, this games has seriously blown me away, and I’m intrigued by the story and the style. Me wantee play…ee, so I popped the above up… I wasn’t going to, but I also put the rest below – so click through if you’re interested. Or not. Your choice! For reference, this is going to be released on PC, X360, and PS3. Be most enjoyment of it. Continue reading 'Dragon Age: Origins looks to be the bomb diggety'»
