5 reasons it sucks to live in Australia (regarding technology, at least)

By Greg, July 19, 2009 8:19 pm

australia Let’s face it — Australia is a beautiful country. There’s so much untouched land, and it’s full of happy little animals, running about, doing their thing. Sure, some of these would be happy to poison and kill you, but hey — leave them alone, and they’ll leave you alone. But there are some problems with living in Australia (and it’s not because it’s full of Australians, thank you very much)… At least, from the perspective of technology. Let’s investigating! Cue list!

Download dilemma

By Greg, July 5, 2009 7:31 pm

file_download The Information Age has presented us with a number of new issues — over-availability of information, piracy, privacy, and learning when is the right time to "click here" without incurring the wrath of any number of viruses, spybots, fraudulent services, or prank scripts designed to embarrass you in front of your colleagues…

The majority of these issues can be controlled by software, but some of them are spiralling into a maleficent maelstrom of mostly moody mm… — sorry, had my finger on the shift button. Some of these issues are getting out of hand, particularly regarding the availability of content… and piracy.

Digital Distribution: time to clean out the shelves?

By Greg, June 28, 2009 10:28 pm

matrix I read an interesting article on digital distribution at ArsTechnica recently and it got me thinking. The article covered a recent investigation into digital distribution of video games by Gamestop, which suggested that digital distribution wouldn’t be mainstream for at least 5 years — and even at that stage they suggested it would still be fledgling with only 25% of the market set up for it. The article then went on to counter these statements by suggesting that digital distribution is already here. But I’m not so sure…

PopCap Games make life good

By Greg, May 23, 2009 11:07 pm

Everybody loves zombies. Even people that say they don’t like zombies secretly love zombies. And that’s what makes PopCap Games’ latest so super special (see video above for proof of awesome)…

PopCap Games makes games. This might be obvious to some, but I thought I’d clarify. They’ve made some pretty well-known titles, including Bejeweled, Zuma, the almighty Peggle, and now, with the release of Plants vs Zombies, have really made their mark on the video game world (if they hadn’t already). I thought PopCap was pretty cool prior to the release of PvZ, now I think they are the shizNIT.

Cloud Gaming and You

By Greg, April 16, 2009 7:43 pm

I wanted to write the wicked kick-ass post about Cloud gaming, referring to the recently announced OnLive service, and speculating about… various things, but then I visited Offworld, and read the below post. It’s pretty much EXACTLY what I wanted to write – both excited and hesitant at the same time. Really worth a read. If you don’t have the time, here’s a quick summary: Cloud Gaming is possibly going to revolutionise gaming, but the first round of technology is quite likely to suck.

Keep up with the Joneses’… with a single application?

By Greg, April 11, 2009 8:20 pm

digsby Messengers. Email. Chat programs. Social networking. There is so much crap we all sign up for, it’s ridiculous. But, at the same time, we seem to find a need for it all… for whatever reasons. For example, I have several email accounts – one I use for my websites, one for crap and spam, one “proper” email — it’s just all over the shop.

I could run each of the programs individually, or log in to the various web pages, but then I would have several process-hogging programs slowing things down — and I hate that. I also hate going in and out of websites just to check on things — As much as I like to pretend I don’t care about my Facebook account, I check it pretty often… Along with my Twitter profile… Sigh… So little time!

SO… I’ve been looking for a way to consolidate my loans it all. I’ve actually been looking for a while — and I think I might have found what I’m after.

Speed up that Internet Australia! Is it all good, though?

By Greg, April 7, 2009 9:18 pm

faster

Australia is finally getting real Internet. I say “real Internet” because we have been living in the land of poo-poo Internet for some time now (well, those of us in Oz, that is) – in fact, there are quite a few people I know that have only JUST RECENTLY made the move to “high-speed” Internet from dial-up! Yes, from dial-up! It’s still available!

*ahem* Living in Japan and having sweet, sweet, awesome Internet spoiled me for Australian ‘net access, but to be honest, I’m not in that much of a bad place at the moment. I guess I average a little over 1 megabit per second with my ISP now, and I can say I’m happy with that – to some degree. And today, the Government released information about their plan to bring fibre to the home – to the friggin’ HOME, people! Think about it! – and 100x better net speeds than I currently have (read about it more in this article from The Age)… and how do I feel about it?

Live Writer Test… Live!

By Greg, April 5, 2009 4:04 pm

Live Writer

I like to think of myself as being lazy. That’s not really something that you would expect to hear someone saying, but hey — not only is it true, it’s beneficial. Why so? Well, my friend, because I find things that make life easier, and I try them out. So I want to pass on my experiences to you good folk.

Now, I’m not going to claim to be able to produce anywhere near the amount of good tips as Lifehacker, for example, but hey, if I find something I like, I’ll point it out!

And what have I discovered today, good people of the ‘net? Windows Live Writer. Sure, many of you may already know of it, but I never thought there was a reason to use it…

I like shoes.

By Greg, March 10, 2009 9:00 pm

shoesI’m a nerd. Sure — it goes without saying. The majority of us bloggers know what we are, and those that think they aren’t… well… They’re fooling themselves. Let’s face it — anyone who seriously thinks they’re hip hardly knows how to navigate the ‘net. Of course, this is a grand overstatement, and the face of geekdom is changing, but whatever. I’m a nerd, and so are you.

That said — us nerds, we are taking over the world. It’s true. If you haven’t heard of the latest Internet meme, you aren’t plugged into society’s pulse. Yep — ‘nerd’ really is starting to equal ‘cool’. But you know what? There’s a problem with that. Nerds don’t know how to handle it, and it annoys the hell out of me. Keep it all… online [updated]

By Mihoko, February 8, 2009 4:45 pm

I think that lots of people save almost everything they do on their computer — like pictures, documents, memos of ideas or designs, even something simple like web bookmarks. Also, most people back up their important data. Here’s something that might help you out…

If you have a netbook with a generous hard drive (lucky you!), and you can carry your data around anywhere, then you’re fine. But at home, I guess you prefer using your 24-inch desktop instead of the little netbook, so you probably draw a line about saving data between your desktop and your netbook. And that can sometimes be a cause of confusion — sometimes you might forget to move data to your netbook or a memory card when you go out. Even if you don’t own a netbook, I’m sure you know what I’m saying… Continue reading 'Keep it all… online [updated]'»
