Well, what did you think? Looks pretty awesome to me. To be honest, I was thinking a new Tron just wouldn’t work. Turns out I may have been wrong. Hudson may be right.
It’s not so common for me to write about movies these days – with a baby, I get little chance to watch them. However, the wife and I decided to treat ourselves recently, so we went to see what al the fuss was about… We saw Avatar 3D, and we were duly impressed. In fact, it’s been a long time since I last walked out of a movie and was disappointed that it had ended. This is particularly impressive given the fact the movie goes for over 2 and a half hours…
Damn, I’ve been so crazy busy with babies and comics and work and visitors and everything recently, I’ve fallen behind on my posts! So I thought I’d bump it up this weekend and get a few out there. But as an interlude (of sorts), I thought I’d do a little "what am I interested in at the moment" post. And here it is, I hope you enjoy!
I read an interesting article on digital distribution at ArsTechnica recently and it got me thinking. The article covered a recent investigation into digital distribution of video games by Gamestop, which suggested that digital distribution wouldn’t be mainstream for at least 5 years — and even at that stage they suggested it would still be fledgling with only 25% of the market set up for it. The article then went on to counter these statements by suggesting that digital distribution is already here. But I’m not so sure…
How many times have I watched TV recently and seen the same old rehashed crap? Beyond count. Beyond comprehension. Beyond Thunderdome (sorry). Even The Simpsons and Family Guy tend to borrow from each other these days (although South Park is still exceptionally awesome). Maybe you’re in the same boat, and are thinking there’s not enough originality on TV these days. Well… I’ve got a suggestion for you — it’s not for everyone, but if it clicks with you, you’ll LOVE it.
Metalocalypse has been around for a while — the second season has come and gone already — but it’s still somewhat in cult territory, due to its content, and this is for good reason. The themes explored by the show are often innocent, but this is in sharp contrast to the events that occur around these themes — murder, mayhem, and evil. This lends the show hilarity… with great success and little to no residual odour.
There are some things in this world I don’t understand – Chinese is a good example of this; quantum physics is another – but the more I think about this one, the more it disappoints me.
Basically, I was reading through my feeds on Google Reader (if you haven’t checked out RSS feeds, get into it! They make life so much easier), and I came across a story about an upcoming movie… and the problem was, the story suggested the movie could become a “critically panned disaster that turns out to be a cult title, like the Chronicles of Riddick”… This was news to me – I thought Riddick and Pitch Black were quite well received…
So I checked Metacritic, and I was shocked. Both movies averaged below 50%… Pitch Black even scored a zero… I also spoke to my nephew, and asked him if he’d seen Riddick, and he referred to Pitch Black as crap. Shock. And the world did spin.
Clive Barker’s books are not generally well-known for their blisteringly awesome movie translations. Hellraiser is the best known (and well loved by myself I need to add) — a reasonably good adaptation of the novella “The Hellbound Heart”. A little slow by today’s standards, but perhaps this is reflects poorly on the quality of modern-day horror movies, rather than reflecting poorly on Hellraiser itself? Not my place to say, but it has a similar feel to The Exocist, a feel that is lacking in modern horror… Sigh. Continue reading 'Flicks from Barker books…'»
