Bring the people back to the cinema…
It’s not so common for me to write about movies these days – with a baby, I get little chance to watch them. However, the wife and I decided to treat ourselves recently, so we went to see what al the fuss was about… We saw Avatar 3D, and we were duly impressed. In fact, it’s been a long time since I last walked out of a movie and was disappointed that it had ended. This is particularly impressive given the fact the movie goes for over 2 and a half hours…
No matter what you know about Avatar, the truth is – it’s nothing new. We’ve seen it all before. The story is simple, the themes fairly standard fare. However, it’s the execution that makes it so worthwhile. The world itself is RICH… You can FEEL the history – not just of the individual characters, but of the world itself. On a more technical side, the use of 3D does not sensationalise the content or belittle the viewer, it merely adds depth and a sense of environment… Something modern movies are missing. Truly – Avatar 3D is a spectacle, something that will take people away from their torrents and bring them back to the cinema. If you think you can wait until it is released on DVD (or for a rip to be available on the tubes), then you’re doing yourself a disservice.
And that’s really the point of this post – go see Avatar at the movies. See it in 2D or 3D, whatever your preference, but see it on the big screen.
I don’t remember the last time I even THOUGHT that, let alone recommended it…

Nice post. I agree that today’s movies do lack proper execution. Have been getting my vintage classic movies on lately. If you have never seen Cool Hand Luke (or anything with young Paul Newman) you’ll never realize how uncool George Clooney actually seems. Avatar is closing out Moonlight cinema this year. If you’ve never done Moonlight, you’re missing out on something special.
Yeah – I think society has neglected the cinema for a long while now. Moonlight cinema, drive-ins – these are experiences that could be lost to the ages… It’s a bit sad, really.
Wifey and I have just made it back from watching said movie ourselves – agreed that it was quite a spectacle and most definitely worth saving up for the big screen. Rather surprised to see Hollywood pushing an anti-imperialism message too!
I don’t know – I think it’s a pretty popular theme recently: science good, military bad. But yes, it was pretty much the backbone of this particular flick, which is good!
