PS3: PixelJunk Shooter
Yep – at first it seems an uninspired and crappy name, but you have to consider the fact that ALL of the PixelJunk titles have been a simple, single word, so it’s not all that bad. In fact, I’d almost go as far as saying the name was the worst thing about this title.
Almost.
I decided to fork out the AUS$12-odd to get this title when I was on my back last week with a ‘prolapsed disk’ – otherwise known as a damn sore back. I thought I needed a game to while away the hours. And I was not displeased with my decision.
It’s a refreshingly great game, with simple cartoony graphics (in the PixelJunk style). However, as per previous PJ games, the simplistic graphics belie its complexity. Sure, there are only a few buttons to press (shoot, grab, and fly, basically), but sometimes there are several things to do at once, and there are puzzles to be solved.Nothing super taxing, but they’re they’re, and I guess the relative simplicity of the puzzles is pretty rewarding – or maybe that’s just because I’m dumb… Whatever.
It FEELS old school, the themes and ideas are old school, but it plays all new school – smooth and silky. Think Geometry wars with direction, and without the bullet madness. And the bosses are ace fun.
However… it’s short. Sure, in all, there are about 50-odd levels (depending on your definition of “level”), but it’s over before you know it, and in reality, that is what let’s the title down. And I guess it’s not the hardest game in the world, but there’s high score chasing and leaderboard climbing to do, and only the best of the best will be able to achieve their goals in these areas…
My opinion? It’s a great game – at the price, you can forgive it’s length.
Why shouldn’t you get it: It’s short, very short, and it’s not that hard. Only about 4-6 hours for a seasoned gamer, possibly less.
Why should you get it: It’s FUN, it’s cheap, and it just plays so damn well. Highly recommended for the price.
